You may want to look at brutefirdrc, a linux-only equivalent of the
inguz plugin. It uses the brutefir convolver, which uses a longer fft
for equalization and can therefore implement steeper filters.

But note that a hardware solution wont, in itself, solve your
attenuation problem. Any filter implemented by the behringer kit could
also be implemented by a squeezeboxserver plugin, and would clip (or
not) at the same level.
