You were right!
I changed the lines in install.xml from
<targetApplication>
<id>SqueezeCentre</id>
<minVersion>7.2</minVersion>
<maxVersion>7.3+</maxVersion>
</targetApplication>
to
<targetApplication>
<id>SqueezeboxServer</id>
<minVersion>7.5</minVersion>
<maxVersion>7.5+</maxVersion>
</targetApplication>
Although I did have to perform a manual install in the Plugins folder
because on a fresh 7.5 install the autorescan plugin is not listed in
the 3rd party list! It would be appreciated if you could revise that
