Sounds like you're using a version of SS that was compiled for OSS.

Download the 'latest'
(http://squeezeslave.googlecode.com/files/squeezeslave-0.9-164-lnx26.tar.gz)
linux ALSA version.

Move and rename the squeezeslave-lnx26-0.9-164 binary to
/usr/local/bin

mv squeezeslave-lnx26-0.9-164 /usr/local/bin/squeezeslave

Now type /usr/local/bin/squeezeslave -L

Mine returns the following, note the number before the colon of the
device you want to use for audio, I'm going to use the Ensoniq
AudioPCI: ES1371 DAC2/ADC (hw:0,0) device id 0;

Output devices:
0: Ensoniq AudioPCI: ES1371 DAC2/ADC (hw:0,0)
1: Ensoniq AudioPCI: ES1371 DAC1 (hw:0,1)
2: front
* 3: default
4: dmix

Try starting it from the command line to test it first like this, note
the -o0 that's a zero after the small case o.

/usr/local/bin/squeezeslave -r15 -o0 -D -Y/var/tmp/squeezeslave.log
-m00:00:00:00:00:02 serverhostname

Try playing something. When you get it working press the letter q to
quit squeezeslave.

If it doesn't work look at the /var/tmp/squeezeslave.log file for
errors and report back.

Now edit the file /etc/rc.local and before the exit 0 at the end of the
file place this line, note that the -D has been replaced by -M

/usr/local/bin/squeezeslave -r15 -o0 -M -Y/var/tmp/squeezeslave.log
-m00:00:00:00:00:02 serverhostname

If the prebuilt won't run, you'll have to build your own binary.
