It will communicate using the API, so as long as the user running MusicIP has write permission to the files you should be fine.
Is the API enabled ? Try opening this page in a web browser: http://localhost:10002/api (If you are using a web browser on another machine, change "localhost" to the hostname of the Ubuntu machine where MusicIP is running) Does the MusicIP mixers work ? If they don't you probably have some general problem with the API.
