Ah sorted! I had opened up the port on my router and added spotify to the windows firewall exception list but that wasn't sufficient. I had to disable the firewall for internal network traffic and that fixed it! I guess I could add the plugin to the exception list but the firewall only accepts exe files. Anyway this will do fine for the moment. Thanks a lot for the helpful pointer.
