Hold brightness is the normal way to initiate upgrade .

Hover I would hold the left button for a while to get into the setup
menu .

Somewhere there it's possible to set the SB3 to auto-upgrade .

SB3 fw upgrades does not come often no risk of flashing to often, in an
SB3 the most likely parts to break is the VFD display or the WIFI card
or -the remote control- if you believe posts on this forum.

What the auto-upgrade does for you is making you independent of the
remote, you can use an universal remote or the Touch remote for an SB3
but none of them have the brightness button, so if or when the original
remote dies you can be stuck without it . Could be complicated to work
around.

Btw really old versions of SB3 fw does not have auto-upgrade, so folks
lingering in 5.x or 6.x or older have a small risk of never being able
to upgrade at all if they suddenly wanted to if they loose the original
remote.
