That means your problem has nothing to do with iPlayer - it is simply WMA playback on device which do not support native WMA as SB3 has native WMA playback.
On Windows WMA stream are decoded using an application called wmadec and it uses Windows supplied libraries. By default the stream is then re-encoded into Flac. If you have an old PC with low power single CPU - this could be CPU intensive but shouldn't be.
