I didn't take artwork caching away, iPeng caches just like before. The
one thing iPeng does no longer do is load the first 450 album covers in
advance at startup but it waits until you actually load them for the
first time. If you've loaded them before they will show up as quickly
as, say, images beyond that 450-image-limit.
Also, since you usually don't restart the app very often under iOS4
there's less of an impact.

The benefit (I hope) is that I get fewer 1-star ratings and rant
e-mails by people with ReadyNASs who are not willing to read the FAQ.
OK, that's exaggerated, but the previous iPeng behavior could pose a
lot of load on slow servers and there was a not-insignificant number of
users who rated iPeng as completely unusable due to this.
So unfortunately I has to trade convenience for users with faster
servers against convenience for people with slower servers - there are
a big number of people using things like a ReadyNAS or a Squeezebox
Touch.
