I think that probably the main benefit of Whitebear is (or was) that:
1) it forced Logitech management to take UPnP/DLNA seriously, 2) it
proved that it is possible to add UPnP/DLNA support on top of
Squeezebox Server (proof of concept), 3) during my development I
pointed out some bugs in prior versions of Squeezebox Server that
needed to be fixed in order for UPnP/DLNA functionality to work (some
of which have not yet been taken on board, by the way), and 4) they
could log the TCP/UDP activities of Whitebear and its dialoogs with the
Squeezebox Server CLI, and could thus facilitate reverse engineering
their own implementation, and perhaps even use it as a benchmark for
their own performance.

But whether Logitech would actually admit this, or whether they would
ever give me any thanks for it, remains an open question...

Try out Whitebear. The middleware that joins the two worlds of:
1. UPnP/DLNA media clients and media players, and,
2. Squeezebox Server and Squeeze Players
Download it for free here: http://www.whitebear.ch/mediaserver
