I was mislead by all the reports of the App staying active and was looking for an issue with background execution or with server communication. Turned out it had nothing to do with that, iOS Apps _always_ keep running behind the screen saver and communication is indeed being shut off. The problem is a background thread locking up and consuming all CPU power which seems to keep the iPhone from throttling the App (apart from also causing power drain while active). Will be fixed in the next release and this time it really looks promising.
