It's not really fingerprinting, it's acoustic analysis. Fingerprinting
is about identifying a song while acoustic analysis is about analyzing
the characteristics of the audio. I believe their acoustic analysis
algorithm is patented and isn't available to the public.

Genius might work good if you have popular music but my experience is
that Genius doesn't work very good if you have a lot of unusual music
which isn't available in iTunes Music Store. Also, MusicIP has a lot
more customization options compared to iTunes, where you for example
can configure how much variation you like.
