I'm running 7.6.0 and unfortunately no, leaving it just to play doesn't
correct it. I've let it run through a playlist of about 40 spotify songs
and each will appear to buffer for about 10 seconds and then skip to the
next track. If I monitor the squeezeboxserver page from my laptop and
login to the server remotely to restart the squeezeboxserver service
via the terminal, the webpage refreshes the playlist album covers for
the songs in the list and I can then play any song in the list
instantly.

Would posting some logs help? I'of be happy to trim them so as not to
clog the thread if you can tell me what you need to see...
