In more detail: Sorry, I was watching the Telly, so I did not want to switch the VPN off, but the programme has now finished!
I have R3 HD twice in my favourites, once accessed using iPLayer Plugin, and once manually tuned without iPlayer Plugin. With VPN on (UK IP address) I can hear a faultless stream either way. With VPN off (Cyprus IP address) I can only receive the stream using the manually tuned favourite. That is what I would expect.
