I assume you know about the title format configuration in SBS ?
The example they showed on the page you linked to didn't seem to be
much more advanced than the current title format already supported by
SBS. Maybe you can describe a bit more what you like to accomplish
which isn't possible through the SBS title format configuration ?
If you make a plugin, I think the trick is to register a title format.
And have a configuration for the plugin where you can configure the
contents of your title format.
Something like:

Slim::Music::TitleFormatter::addFormat('MYSMARTFORMAT',\&getSmartFormatValue);
--------------------
And then the getSmartFormatValue will get a Slim::Schema::Track object
as input and you are supposed to return the string you like to display.
And you can in the SBS title format configuration use MYSMARTFORMAT as a
keyword.
If you have a Classic, Boom or Transporter, you also might want to look
into "Music Information Screen" and "Title Switcher" plugins which
offers a bit more customization possibilities than standard SBS if you
want to configure what's shown on the Now Playing screen on the
device.
Unfortunately SqueezePlay is a lot less configurable, so if you were
looking for a customized Now Playing screen on a Touch, Radio or
Controller, your best bet is probably the Custom Clock plugin.
If you were looking for SBS web interface improvements or browse menu
improvements, I think the only thing currently available is the
standard SBS title format configuration.
