An incremental Custom scan would be a dream.
I hope Logitech realise how valuable you are to them and all of us.
I'm not sure how but automatically detected incremental scans are now
triggering the Custom Scan
I suspect I have fiddled my way to something unexpected?

Before discovering I apparently don't need it, the workaround you
suggested was easy enough to achieve. I enabled the Automatically
detect changes box and then pinned the Custom Scan frame in Firefox so
it was really only two extra clicks to achieve.
I'm using the Rating WMP tag as you guessed.
At the time I started it seemed easier to drag the ratings in to the
Squeezebox environment rather then push them out despite my wishes for
the opposite.
My ReadyNAS does spend a fair bit of time churning through scans, but
other than managing torrents and the Squeezebox it's not required for
much else during listening hours.
