I'm thinking that at this point the best bet to get IR blaster type functionality is to get an external USB IR blaster and put reall live lirc on the Touch. I think that could be done without modifying the firmware in any way.
There would then need to be an applet that talked to lirc and the rest of the Touch or maybe to a plugin on an external server. There are a number of different ways it could be configured.
