Ah-ha .. it's something to do with the R4 I had assigned to a preset. It's evidently changed since yesterday! Going via the usual menus in iPlayer R4 is now playing.
Something seems to have changed to the BBC stream addresses - Radio 5 on a preset is also reporting ip resolution problem. This worked earlier this morning! And now the menu bug seems to have disappeared!!
