Just an update, for "closure". After a great deal of diagnosis, it turned out to be a faulty RAM module. So, not a FreeNAS problem, certainly not a Slimnas one, and not (as it now turns out) a problem with upgrading to LMS.
I reformatted my HDD (to remove any trace of anything, just in case), installed the latest stable FreeNAS I could find - 0.7.2 Sabanda (revision 8191) - then installed Slimnas 2.0.2 and LMS 7.7.0. Fingers crossed, everything is currently working.
