The OP didn't want to lose quality and IIRC didn't want decoding and recompressing into lossless format - which is why the mplayer/dumpstream approach suited.
The AAC / ADTS files produced by mplayer are still playable by mplayer, vlc and even older SB players through SBS/LMS.
