SBT handles AAC natively. SB3 and Softsqueeze are handled identically - the AAC is decoded by LMS using faad and then sent to the player as a Flac stream.
When I tested it - the stream failed on all players at some times and played on all players at other times. When I checked the stream with mplayer - it showed audio format errors when it couldn;t play the stream.
