When my SB I died, I simply installed Squeezeslave on the XBMC box, that I have connected to the TV. (it runs on linux, installed on an EEE Box)
It's configured to run demonized at startup, and choses a non-HDMI sound output, which, in turn, is connected to the HiFi. The soundcard in the EEE Box handles this very well, as I can play both a movie on the TV, and send music to the amplifier - at the same time.
