Don't include the '#'.  That makes bash interpret the whole command as a
comment, rather than as something to execute.  I'm not sure why
prefacing a command with a '#' in instructions has become a convention. 
I suppose it's suppose to stand in for whatever prompt your bash session
presents you with.  But it clearly can confuse things.
