I decided to use http://www.klieme.com/TimeMachineScheduler.html instead as it seems to be actively developed for Lion and Mountain Lion. I'm now only backing up once a day between 11pm and 6am. Only time will tell, but I'm pretty sure that starving a streaming process of CPU when TM kicks in isn't a good thing.
