Ahhh. This is an excellent question!  Sorry I missed your edit earlier
in the thread. I am running Java 6, but not for any reason other than I
was not able to get Softsqueeze to run on Java 7. Softsqueeze would not
start up and I had seen a few posts recommending downgrading from
openjdk 7 to sun java 6 as a solution; so that is what I did. It was
somewhat of a pain to install java 6 on ubuntu 12.04; so if anyone can
confirm that softsqueeze will run on java 7, I would be more than happy
to go back!

I'll see if I can find the posts that I am referrning to.
