Predefined sync groups are one of these things that are easier in a few
cases and make life more complicated in at least as many. The biggest
issue with predefined sync groups is that they have a tendency to extend
playback to rooms where you didn't expect it to.
I've even had it developed half-way through and then found out how many
questions you have to ask the user when he selects a group, even when
that one is already configured:
- Which playlist do you want to use?
- What do you do with players that are synced now but not part of the
group?
- What do you do if people select conflicting groups (you have a zone
with players A B C playing and now somebody select a zone with B C
D)?
- Do players falling away continue to play or do they stop and what
about players being added?
And then you find out that groups only make sense when you don't change
them.
Sonos handles this fine in that with their system a player is only part
of one group at a time and that all players that are part of the group
are always on (they don't have a "power" state, a player is either
playing or stopped and all synced players always play as long as at
least one does so). Squeezebox doesn't do that, here you have a power
state and many people use it to switch on/off stuff like amps and even
their servers (using the WOL state) so you can't just ignore it.
But if you don't change the groups anyway, then this is a setup thing
you do once and really isn't more complicated in iPeng as well, because
then you only have to select a player from the group.
Snyc groups sound simple as long as you don't try them, if you do,
you'll quickly find that they are not, there's some thread somewhere
here in the forum that discusses sync group workflows at great length.
