Did a rescan of changed files but not a clear and rescan; do I need the clear and rescan?
You shouldn't need to run a scan manually at all. When the plugin is used for the first time, it'll automatically trigger the scan and export of data.
Additional to starting the mix based on some track or artist you can use one of the "recipes" in My Music/SmartMix to start a pre-defined mix. These recipes aren't perfect for everybody. Therefore you can tweak them using the "Blender" feature, found in the web UI.
