I tried a few other things without success,

* compiled/installed mpg123 for i386 support (file command still reports
x86_64 though)
* installed mad and compiled with i386 support (file command reports
x86_64)
* replaced embedded squeezelite-osx binary with the universal binary
from google code

file squeezelite-osx # binary included with Local Player
squeezelite-osx (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386

file squeezelite-osx # universal binary version
squeezelite-osx: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
squeezelite-osx (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit executable
x86_64
squeezelite-osx (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386

In the logs I see wrong architecture for both of mad and libmpg3
libraries now. I still can't figure out how to get Local Player to
communicate with a squeezelite instance I manually launch to try your
suggestion (run with arch -i386). I tried to restart LMS....
