Below an example of the reason I don't really like the mixes made by Smartmix. This kind of sequence of songs never would come up, but to me it's logical and sounds quite correct. (Please ignore the incorrect cover for the track by Bertignac et les Visiteurs ;)) If somebody has a recipe where this would be a possible kind of mix, please enlighten me,
TBH: I doubt you'd ever get this. IMHO TEN tries to be too smart in some ways. Eg. as soon as I would play some "local" artist (mostly Swiss for me - know Stephan Eicher?), the selection would be very limited, eg. Swiss artists only. No matter what musical style. The other day I was trying to mix based on Stephanie Heinzmann. Yes, she won one of those casting shows in Germany. But the result was a mix of 90% casting show winners and runner-ups I had never heard of (I don't follow those shows - and you'd have no idea how many of them are broadcasted!). Unfortunately this is a problem I've experienced with all music services which according to TEN is using their backend. iHeartRadio, MOG, Deezer... with all of them I would get the same kind of oddities.
Yesterday I had another odd case where I was mixing based on Melody Gardot, which would get me tracks by Holly Cole (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holly_Cole). Ok. But they would mix in a track by an artist they spelled "Holy Cole" too. This track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyiR5vCA9Iw. Now that's something that never would have happened with MIP :-).
MusicIP on the other hand relies purely on the mathematical analysis of your music. And I'm still amazed about the mixes it does. Nothing I could say about any of the "smart mixing" features provided in any of the other softwares or services I've tried so far (incl. Apple Genius, Pandora, Last.fm, Slacker, aforementioned services etc.).
Your best bet probably is to fire up The Blender from the plugin (http://yourserver:9000/plugins/SmartMix/blender.html) and try to create an Artist Radio based on some example artist you'd like to have in the mix. Enter their names in the artist field, comma separated. Additionally you could add some genre(s) to the description.
