Actually, the pi's loose the network connection even when I switch out the cable modem (configuration: modem - router - pi, all wired). I use static IP's (192.168.1.xx). Most of the time, the pi's initially respond to ssh request, however, close the connection prematurely before it can be successfully established. Will have to dig out the rest, thanks for the help, and sorry that I did not do a little more homework already.
