The phillips bulbs might not be adequate, but there are certainly other alternatives.
using microcontroller & computer software might do the trick to change RGB led string to follow beat, something in the lines of what they do with TV images http://learn.adafruit.com/adalight-diy-ambient-tv-lighting However, following beat might not be the target.
