I now think that it is connected with a recent change at deezer. Since I switched to a premium plus account it took a couple of hours and now its back at its normal behavior.
Good to know, yes. Indeed, Deezer changed behaviour "dramatically" for all those of us who were previously able to use SmartMix with Deezer for free. But tbh. I do understand their move, and was actually surprised it did work for so long...
