Our posts crossed.  I will give your suggestion a go.  However, since
last posting I have power-cycled the iPod which looks as if it cleared
out the Diagnostics. (I had power-cycled before and also carried out a
Factory Reset so that the iPod was a clean as possible.)

I also downloaded a small app that displays Memory thinking that (a) it
might show up any applications running in the background that shouldn't
be and (b) show if the Free memory is gradually disappearing.  Needless
to say I've been running iPeng and it has lasted longer with no signs of
crashing!  Have to suspend investigation until tomorrow.
