What Text::Unidecode provides is a function, unidecode(...) that takes Unicode data and tries to represent it in US-ASCII characters. The representation is almost always an attempt at transliteration -- i.e., conveying, in Roman letters, the pronunciation expressed by the text in some other writing system.
We have some transliteration built in to Slim::Utils::Text, which I'm using in some places (some APIs are smart enough to deal with transliterated names, others aren't). I did avoid them in the file saving, as the results would not be recognized by LMS' default scanner module and can be confusing to the user. It might be an option, though.
You could use the transliterated artist name for the file name, completely avoiding any special characters. It's pure perl, so it'd be easy to bundle.
