found it, thanks to http://blog.ericwhite.ca/articles/2012/10/06/triode-spotify-connection-issues/ (which incidentally points back to this thread) , the resolv.conf was pointing to DNS I thought I had changed it through the network config of the Squeezeplug interface but obvisouly not.
