Try the hotttness parameter: it's an index of popularity and recentness. Eg. Lorde might be hottt, as it's popular and recent, but the Beatles are much more popular overall, with lower recentness. Thus they might have a lower hotttness.
Unfortunately a quick search of the.echonest.com's documentation didn't bring up the official description of hotttness. I hope you get it anyway :-).
