Thanks, Felix. I actually downloaded a .conf file for my AVR and when that didn't work I tried one for my XBox 360. After that didn't work, I thought I would then try to keep it "simple" - little did I know I was trying the impossible :).
I looked at my emitter with a digital camera as you suggested and it does appear to be flashing so it seems that commands are being emitted. I will try to create a .conf file for my specific AVR since the .conf I downloaded may not have the correct commands (I have an Onkyo TX-NR709 and the most recent one available was for the TX-SR607). The XBox 360 should be universal so I'm a little stumped why that one doesn't work.
