I don't know if the attached ffmpeg wrapper script might help someone.

I made this a while ago after I discovered that a lot of ffmpeg
processes were hanging around after I stopped playing the underlying
streams. It has been working successfully. I included notes in the
script.

But I haven't tried it out in this particular (hls streaming) context.
