I was intending to raise this matter - particular with reference to Ubuntu, etc. There are people recommending the apt-get install from the ppa:kirillshkrogalev repository. Others have mentioned the up to date static builds from http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/ (which is lilnked to on the ffmpeg website). This is the road I went down. For the brave/technically competent there is also the option of compiling a static build, using the instructions given on https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/CompilationGuide/Ubuntu Then there is the libav fork ... Is it possible to come to a considered view about best option?
