This was the system for many many years with mplayer. In fact you could
not play live BBC stream for a long time - I spent a long time tracking
the mplayer bug whic hcause the live stream problem.

A way around the ffmpeg issue can be done (e.g. a Perl program to unwrap
HLS/MPEG) but the question is it worth spending the time or will BBC
move on in a few months. For users with ffmpeg problems - there is the
MP3 alternative.

This can be fixed but I think it would be simpler to have a say a
PlayBBCLive plugin which has the Live stream (with settings for Uk/Non
UK, High/low quality, CDN select) to avoid

You have a short memory - this sort of messing is what happened
everytime the BBC changed website, feeds and formats. It was resolve
dbecause Triode put out updates quickly.

The BBCiPlayer plugin is in limbo. The choice is to:
1. Assume Triode will come back and do nothing except post patches etc.
until he returns.
2. Assume Triode is unavailable for a period of time and so take
control. Make a fork of BBCiPlayer plugin so that users can migrate and
be kept up to date as far as possible. I can do some of this but I am
not in the UK, a fork of BBciPlayer plugin will require somebody in UK
to be part owner.
