What I do know is that when I couldn't sq2u to work I looked at what ufw (my firewall) was blocking, and this was one. When I allowed my server to see the multicast, the system worked. So some part of the system must be sending an 'all hosts' request which is relayed by my gateway to my local network. Beats me, but it works :)
