No. More or less the other way around :)
Technically, both use the CLI over JSON. But the Web UI and the Logitech
App don't query the library using the documented CLI but instead they
query a menu that gets prepared on the server side, including the full
text being displayed.

iPeng queries a list of tracks with information about the tracks, one of
these information types is the "trackartist". That's what iPeng displays
unless there is no "trackartist" being returned, in which case iPeng
displays the default "artist" (another field iPeng queries) instead.

I don't know what the server uses to display the artist in this menu,
it's undocumented in the sense that there is only a way to get a menu,
you have no control over or information about _what_ is in that menu. It
could be track or a list of configuration settings or metainformation,
it's not typed. That's why it's not really useful for iPeng.

Problems b) and c) probably happen on tracks where there is no track
artist at all.

I suspect the issue here is that there are too many possible
configurations and not all of them might be well-tested because it takes
so long to switch between them and do a rescan in the process.
I, for example, use two separate lists for artists and albumartists in
LMS 7.9 and I don't see your issues, I have all tracks in compilations
listed with the track artist.
And I unfortunately right now don't have the three hours to spare that
re-configuring, scanning, testing and reversing the configuration would
cost me (a scan of my library takes well above 1 hour over the network
from my LMS 7.9 Mac). Especially since there wouldn't be anything I can
do short of confirming or not confirming your observation.

You are using a recent LMS 7.9 build, right?

Yes, definitely. The Beta-Forum would be the right place for this.
