I dropped the firewall and restarted the executable. After fussing a bit I managed to get a Pandora stream to make noise, but it constantly rebuffered every 3-4 seconds. I gather there is a buffer setting that needs modification for that. A little surprising for an MP3 stream, but the defaults are probably wonky. However, I still cannot get an ALAC file to play and when I last tried the executable terminated. So, it doesn't like some part of the configuration. Still, good progress here. I can see that this is eventually going to be functional.
