@stereoptic: do you output the sound direct to the hardware device (without software conversions)? All output settings can be changed on the Audioplayer-Page in advanced settings (Squeezelite). Can you post a screenshot of your settings? You might want to remove all Alsa-Settings an give it a try (default).
@strim: if you just want to use airplay you can use the shaiport sync player, that is on the audioplayer tab of the Max2Play webinterface.
