Yes, the plugin does the installation of the standalone app, but all it does from that point of view is selecting the right binary and making sure it is executable. You can download directly the zip file from the repository on sourceforge and then you'll find everything in a /Bin sub-directory in that zip. Just un-zip it wherever you want to go standalone.
