Yes it is the close to the benefits of a Virtual Machine but much lighter. Instead of having a complete CPU "virtualized" and installing a whole operating system on it from scratch, it uses the physical (real) base operating system (Linux) of your machine and overlays just the libraries, apps or drivers you need to build your "virtual machine" (container).
