I wouldn't say backwards, it's just a different concept that trades
flexibility for better battery life, UI responsiveness, and security. 
For a phone, it wasn't a bad trade off. The API was good enough for
probably 80-90% of the apps that people would normally use on a phone. 
On the tablet or desktop, it is a lot more limiting, but Windows 10 has
certainly improved the situation.

Android has it's own problems at the API level and I have a few gripes
the architecture of the OS itself, but that's another story...
