OK it's gzip, thanks for that piece of information. As you say this is lossless data compression, but I'm amazed there is enough of the headers for it to make any real difference to the overall bit rate of the stream. Maybe on the lower of the two bit rates non UK streams it gains a few percent? As for choice, well if Dash had audio dynamic range compression applied and HLS did not I'd be switching to HLS. But that's not what is happening.
