MIP converts the music track it is analyzing to .wav internally then
analyzes it. If the m4a spec changed since MIP development ceased then
MIP probably can't convert it.

You should be able to convert the m4a to mp3 at the same bit rate so you
don't lose any more detail, then MIP will be able to analyze the track.
Then you could even copy the MIP tags back to the m4a file using MP3Tag,
a google search for "MP3Tag copy tag from file to file" gives a few
options.
