Thanks for chiming in Michael - but what appears to be happening is once checked, the check mark doesn't stick, so there is nothing to uncheck to remove the photo from the favorites folder. The check boxes always appear as blank when subsequently summoned.
I guess I could create other Favorite folders and populate them very carefully.
