We use Visual Source Safe, and would be dead in the water without it. The best thing to do with a Plum project file is to "Check In and Leave Checked Out" so that it stays writable and you can just check in again (always leaving checked out, of course) and label whenever you get to a major revision point. That way you can rollback to a stable point if things become unstable.
